Luke-Act III: On the Road with Jesus

Luke ACT 3, Introducing Jesus

At the end of Luke 9, things change. Jesus decides it is time to walk to Jerusalem where he knows he will die. He knows his mission: to seek and save the lost. That means giving everything for the ones he loves. In Luke 10-13, Jesus goes on the road with his disciples. As he walks … he teaches us about and anxiety and the signs of the times. Have you ever spent time Jesus? This is your opportunity to come to him and cast all you fears and worry and doubts at his feet. Listen to to his voice … on the road.  

“On the road,” is a key theme in this section. Jesus makes the turn for Jerusalem with his disciples. He walks and walks and teaches them. Images of a journey of faith should be prevalent on the stage.

Luke Series Overview
Have you ever lost something … something that was precious to you? It could be a family member, a wedding ring, a career, or, today, even you phone. Parts of our lives are precious to us. The question is: how far would you go? If someone or something is lost, how far would you go to seek and save them? We live in a world fill with lost people. People are searching, seeking, something bigger and better—something to fill the gap we sense in our hearts. People are longing for salvation but finding it in the wrong places. We need a savior.

The Gospel of Luke is the story of God himself, Jesus Christ, coming to earth to seek and save the lost. Luke is a long book, but it shows us many dimensions of Jesus. In every section we see Jesus seeking us. He comes as a baby through the incarnation … seeking us. He performs miracles to show his power .. as he seeks us. He walks along the road with us as we ask questions. He dies for us … but then he rises again. And now, he sends his followers out into the world to seek the lost.  

It’s the call of Jesus. How far would you go … to seek the lost?  

What is the point? These books begin with hope, but end in disappointment. The spiritual state of the people are unchanged. The political and social reforms don’t address the core concerns of the heart. The book points us forward to the need for the new covenant which would renovate the human heart as prophesied by Jeremiah (ch 31) and Ezekiel (ch 36).

New Believers

Begin Your Journey Here | The Gospel of Jesus Christ is Good News! But first, there is some bad news. The Bible tells the whole story of humanity in four parts:

Creation

The first book in the Bible is Genesis, and it says that God created the world and it was good (Gen 1:31). There He created a man and a woman and placed them in a garden called Eden. They were to be fruitful and multiply and to partner with God in caring for this world, and the presence of the glory of God was there with them … until sin came into the world.

 

Fall

The tragedy of the Bible is called the Fall, that moment when mankind rebelled against God and His right to govern and rule over their lives. Since this moment, all of creation has fallen into sin. Sin is disobeying God and his commandments, rebelling against God, and falling short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). And mankind is desperate and groaning for things to go back to the way they were supposed to be and awaits its promised liberation from bondage (Romans 8:19), until the promised redeemer would come… 

Redemption

In the fullness of time, God sent His son, Jesus Christ, to live the life we should have lived which was a perfect sinless life and to die the death we deserved. He died as a substitute on the cross for our sins, was buried, and then rose victoriously over the grave. He then gave his followers a commission to proclaim this Gospel (good news). The message of the Gospel is the message of God’s grace, mercy and the forgiveness of sins for all who believe.

Restoration

But this is not the end of the story… The testimony of the Bible is that God has every intention of renewing and restoring this world to a glory surpassing what it had at first. (Eph 3:20-21; Haggai 2:9) Jesus taught his disciples about the coming “renewal of all things.” (Matt 19:28). Our final destination is a renewed and restored world with resurrected bodies living with God who dwells among His people (Rev 21-22). This is why the good news is so good. We find that to be very exciting! 

So what do you do now?
Our response to the Gospel is to place our faith in Christ. Are you ready to trust Him? If you have recently made a decision to begin a relationship with Jesus, how wonderful! This means two things: First, Jesus has become your savior. Second, you have become a child of God. We call this Salvation. Becoming a follower of Jesus is the most important decision you can make in your life. Know how excited we are for you!

Pastor Dave Hentschel

Rev. David Hentschel has been blessed to serve as the Lead Pastor of Preaching, Spiritual Formation and Care at Millington Baptist Church in Basking Ridge, NJ. Prior to this ministry assignment, he has enjoyed pastoring in other churches in New Jersey and Texas for the past 20 years. His background in public speaking and business helps tremendously with leadership and strategic planning and he is thrilled to have the opportunity to pastor and teach the scriptures in the local church setting. Pastor Dave holds an A.B.S. and a B.S. in Biblical Studies from Cairn University and a Th.M. in Bible Exposition and Pastoral Ministries from Dallas Theological Seminary. He is married to his wife Juli, and they enjoy three wonderful daughters and one awesome son in law. Some of his favorite activities include reading, spending time with his family and playing basketball.

Pastor Bob Erbig

Rev. Bob Erbig has served Millington Baptist church for 11 years and is currently the Lead Pastor for Preaching, Family Life and Mission.  Bob’s role allows him to combine his passion for proclaiming God’s Word, building strong families, and empowering followers of Christ to influence the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bob runs the Underground Sessions ministry, which focuses on current cultural topics from a Christian Worldview. Bob holds a B.A. from Eastern University in English Literature and Theatre and a M.Div. from Denver Seminary with a focus in Youth and Family Ministries. He has served  churches in New Jersey and Colorado in pastoral ministry for the last 20 years. Bob is married to Amanda and together they enjoy two daughters and a son. Bob loves traveling, reading, playing sports, and catching the latest Marvel movie.

The Office & Information Manager provides essential communication and administrative support to various ministries, Pastors and Ministry Team members as they seek to build up the body of Christ at MBC. This position also requires that MBC information on our facilities, classes, events, and community be organized and accurate. The Office & Information Manager serves under the direct supervision of the Sr. Director of Administration & Connection Ministries and works cooperatively with the Director of Communications.

Part Time Discipleship Coordinator

MBC is looking to hire a Part-Time Discipleship Coordinator. The MBC Discipleship Coordinator will oversee discipleship initiatives in the church (adult education, small groups, women’s ministry, men’s ministry) to help the MBC church body be supported and to mature in their faith. The Discipleship Coordinator will work closely with and report to the MBC Lead Pastor of Spiritual Formation and Care.

Financial Manager 

MBC is looking to hire a Full-Time Financial Manager. The Financial Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing most aspects of the church’s financial matters. This person has the responsibility of insuring the Church’s financial operations are processed and reported accurately and with integrity. This includes managing the day-to-day business processes and providing support to the Leadership Team. This will include but is not limited to the responsibility for internal control and providing assistance for the annual audit of MBC financial records. The Financial Manager shall report to and be accountable to the Board of Elders of the Church and shall maintain open communication and work cooperatively with the church’s Leadership and staff.

Follow-up Team

Follow up with first-time visitors who have filled out connection cards on Sunday morning. The Team gives each visitor a personal call and email to thank them for coming and see if they had any questions about their visit.

Sunday Morning Coffee & Cafe

Encourage the informal gathering of our people in Fellowship Hall between the services on Sunday mornings by having coffee and donated goodies available.

 

Ushers and Greeters, 9am & 10:45am Services 

If you are great with people and enjoy meeting and making others feel welcome, consider serving on the Welcome Team. Team members are the first contact our guests have with the people of MBC and, in some cases, the church as a whole.  Members of this team serve either as greeters or ushers. Greeters are stationed at the entrances and ensure that all guests are extended a warm welcome to MBC. Ushers direct guests and engage newcomers in welcoming conversation. This team is the instrumental first step in presenting Christ, His church and His people in a positive and enriching way to everyone in attendance on Sunday.

 

Parking Team 

Help in the parking lot to move traffic through and to more effectively manage our available space.

 

Shuttle Drivers
This team drives the church’s bus shuttle between the church and the Dewy Meadow Plaza overflow parking lot on Sunday mornings, on a rotating schedule.

Buildings and Grounds 

Assists in the maintenance of the premises and furnishings of the church, through both occasional help and as part of scheduled workdays.

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministers work alongside pastors to care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support for people going through difficult times such as divorce, grief, hospitalization, unemployment, terminal illness, relocation, chronic illness, or loneliness.

Women’s Ministries

Women’s Ministries provide opportunities for women from MBC and the surrounding community to connect, grow in their faith, discover ways to partner in ministry, and give back to others. Are you looking for a place to connect with other women while discovering God’s Word together? Women’s Bible studies meet on Tuesday mornings at 10am in the Youth & Family Ministry building, and Tuesday evenings at 7pm via Zoom. There are also several other ongoing studies. Audio Visual Team

Volunteer Opportunities:

ProPresenter: Facilitates the various media components through video projection during the Sunday AM worship services.

Sound Technician: Operates the sound equipment and provides audio support for the sanctuary and fellowship hall during Sunday AM services. (May occasionally be requested for special events.)

Lighting Technician: Operates the house / theatrical lighting equipment for Sunday AM worship services. (May occasionally be requested for special events.)

Video Recorder: Operates the camera equipment to capture, record, and stream Sunday AM worship services. (May occasionally be requested for special events.)

Missions Team

Promotes and educates the church body concerning missions, supports our World Partners while in the field, determines how to best utilize the church’s designated funds for missions, and steers the church’s vision for missions.

Senior Ministry

Provides fellowship and support for the senior members of MBC as well as an avenue of outreach to their friends and neighbors.  Seniors gather on the third Friday (October through June) for lunch, followed by a program of interest, enrichment, enjoyment, and outreach. One or two special events are held during the year.

Graphic Design: Artists may assist in creating our print media, sermon series imagery, signage, and other digital media.

Photography & Video: Photography and video are vital and growing elements here at MBC. We utilize these forms within the services as well as various media outlets to tell the emerging story of MBC’s Christ centered community. Currently, photographers and videographers capture a variety of MBC events and tell these stories in various print and digital social media outlets. If you have experience in photography, film editing, and/or producing, we would love for you to join our efforts.

Social Media: Interested in social media? Can’t stop tweeting? In our ever-connecting world, it is vital we use all means possible to communicate the grace of the Gospel and the narrative of our growing community.
